Salinity and nutrient modulate soil bacterial communities in the coastal wetland of the Yellow River Delta, China

Qingli Cheng et al.

Summary: The Yellow River Delta is the largest and youngest estuarine and coastal wetland in China and bacterial communities in the soil are significantly influenced by factors related to seawater erosion, nutrient levels, and human disturbance. Seawater erosion drives the variations of marine oligotrophic bacterial communities in early succession stages, while nutrient availability enhances riverine copiotrophs in the late stages.

Human Activities Introduced Degenerations of Wetlands (1975-2013) across the Sanjiang Plain North of the Wandashan Mountain, China

Jing Xie et al.

Summary: Human-induced dramatic loss and fragmentation of wetlands need to be further understood through historical backtracking analysis at a geographical landscape scale. Agriculture activities were identified as the dominant driving force for the degradation of wetlands, with extensive agricultural reclamation being the main cause of rapid loss of wetland areas over the period of 1975-2000. The protection and restoration implemented under governmental policies contributed to the mitigated loss of wetland areas over the period of 2000-2013.
