The container transport system during Covid-19: An analysis through the prism of complex networks

David Guerrero et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the changes in the maritime network before and after the Covid-19 outbreak. The study shows a decrease in global maritime connectivity and significant differences between ports and inter-port links. It further reveals the varied impact of Covid-19 mitigation measures on regional port hierarchies, with reduced port concentration in Europe and Africa and increased concentration in Asia and North America. The research highlights the resilience of large ports and densely interconnected small ports, while smaller transshipment hubs and bridges are more negatively affected.

Implication of COVID-19 outbreak on ship survey and certification

Dong Nam et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted smooth operation of ships by causing difficulty in arranging ship surveys due to travel restrictions for surveyors. To address this issue, temporary measures such as granting 3-month extension of ship surveys have been put in place. However, further extension beyond 3 months is facing uncertainties due to the lack of legal grounds in both Class rules and IMO instruments.

How would government subsidize the port on shore side electricity usage improvement?

Yubing Wang et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the issue of government subsidy structure for ports with the aim of proposing an optimized framework to maximize subsidy efficiency for emission reduction. Results show that when a balance is reached between port's SSE supply capacity and ships' SSE demand, the optimized government subsidy structure can achieve the utmost level of subsidy efficiency. The study suggests that in the initial stages of promoting SSE, the government should provide more subsidies for facility construction, shifting towards subsidizing SSE operations in later years for better emission reduction.

The CO2 reduction potential of shore-side electricity in Europe

B. Stolz et al.

Summary: Through combining emission report data from the EU with ship tracking data, the study estimated the auxiliary power demand at berth for 714 major ports in the EEA and the UK. The results indicate that supplying the auxiliary power demand from national grids or CO2-neutral electricity could lead to significant reductions in CO2 emissions from ships at ports and contribute to local air pollution reductions.

Evolutionary game analysis on behavior strategies of multiple stakeholders in maritime shore power system

Lang Xu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the mechanism of interaction among the strategic choices of a shore power system involving government, port enterprises, and liner companies, using an evolutionary game model. The study found that the government tends to use incentives, port enterprises prefer to implement shore power, and liner companies choose to modify shore power facilities. The initial strategy of government significantly impacts the strategic evolution of port enterprises and liner companies.

Impacts of the COVID-19 epidemic on merchant ship activity and pollution emissions in Shanghai port waters

Kun Shi et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 epidemic, merchant ship activities and atmospheric pollutant emissions in Shanghai port waters are significantly impacted. Ship count and utilization frequency are reduced, leading to longer turnaround times. Cargo ship emissions decrease while container ships and tankers produce slightly decreased emissions, highlighting the importance of promoting shore power equipment use.

Impact of COVID-19 on environmental noise emitted from the port

Luka Curovic et al.

Summary: Identification and ranking of noise sources are crucial for noise abatement programs, particularly in complex sources like seaports. The COVID-19 epidemic provided a unique opportunity to observe immediate noise reduction in various transportation sectors. Results show that noise levels in the port area decreased significantly with reduced shipping traffic during the pandemic.

Estimating the effect of COVID-19 epidemic on shipping trade: An empirical analysis using panel data

Lang Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the gaps in shipping trade between China and different regions during the period February-October 2020, and suggests that government prevention and control measures have a negative impact on export trade, while import trade increases accordingly.

Ship choice and shore-power service assessment for inland river container shipping networks

Zhijia Tan et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a network-based model to study the behavior of container ships choosing shore power in an inland river shipping system. The efficiency of shore power in all connected ports is evaluated for environmental improvement, and the differential effects of promotion policies on different ports are investigated incorporating the choice behavior of ships. The method is carefully examined in a simulation example of the Yangtze River.

Efficiency of Chinese ECA policy on the coastal emission with evasion behavior of ships

Zhijia Tan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the analysis of pollutant emissions in the shipping industry and ECA policy. The results show that emission reduction and cost savings first increase and then decrease with the distance of the ECA boundary, which can help the government further evaluate and design relevant policies.
