Keeping weight off: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction alters amygdala functional connectivity during weight loss maintenance in a randomized control trial

Serhiy Y. Chumachenko et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve understanding of the neural and psychological mechanisms modified by mindfulness in individuals who recently lost weight. The results showed that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) group had increased functional connectivity while the control group had decreased connectivity between certain brain regions. Although non-significant changes in weight were observed at 6 months, the MBSR group maintained their weight and showed improvements in depression symptoms.

Association Between Midlife Obesity and Its Metabolic Consequences, Cerebrovascular Disease, and Cognitive Decline

Filip Morys et al.

Summary: This observational cohort study of over 20,000 participants with a mean age of 63 years found that body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage were positively related to markers of systemic inflammation, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes. Hypertension and diabetes were in turn associated with cerebrovascular disease, which was linked to lower cortical thickness and volume, higher subcortical volumes, and cognitive deficits.
