The effect of sell-by dates on purchase volume and food waste

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: This article constructs a theoretical model of rational food waste and empirically examines the impact of extending a food product's sell-by date on household purchase volume and food waste. The results show that the new policy reduces purchase volume by approximately 10% while increasing actual consumption of milk, leading to a reduction in food waste by more than 10%. This consumer welfare-improving pattern is proven to be applicable to all types of perishable food with price-inelastic demand.

Identifying the links between consumer food waste, nutrition, and environmental sustainability: a narrative review

Zach Conrad et al.

Summary: Emerging research shows unexpected connections between food waste, nutrition, and environmental sustainability. Higher quality diets are linked to more waste, which leads to wasted resources and greenhouse gas emissions. Nutrition professionals need to expand into interdisciplinary fields to address these issues.

Examining Nutrition and Food Waste Trade-offs Using an Obesity Prevention Context

Brenna Ellison et al.

Summary: Obesity and food waste are interconnected issues caused by surplus food. Efforts to reduce food waste may lead to unintended consequences related to obesity, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach. Understanding how consumer actions affect waste and its consequences in the food system is crucial for addressing both problems simultaneously.

Food Resource Management Mediates the Relationship Between Participation in a SNAP-Ed Nutrition Education Program and Diet Quality

Omolola A. Adedokun et al.

Summary: The study shows that food resource management skills mediate the relationship between participation in SNAP-Ed nutrition education program and diet quality, with about 70% of the effect of program participation on diet quality being transferred by FRM skills. The hypothesized model had acceptable fit indices, indicating that participation in SNAP-Ed program enhanced participants' FRM, which in turn improved their diet quality.

Food Skills: Associations With Diet Quality and Food Waste Among Canadian Parents

Nicholas Carroll et al.

Summary: The study found associations between parents' food skills and their family's diet quality and food waste, particularly finding that food safety knowledge, planning, and conceptualizing food were positively related to diet quality. Additionally, knowledge related to best before dates, conceptualizing food, and mechanical techniques were associated with more avoidable and unavoidable food waste.
