Genomic insights of Acinetobacter baumannii ST374 reveal wide and increasing resistome and virulome

Nayara Helisandra Fedrigo et al.

Summary: WGS-based surveillance has greatly enhanced the ability to monitor the global spread and emergence of multidrug-resistant clones of clinically relevant pathogens. The genomic characterization and comparative analysis of an Acinetobacter baumannii belonging to the sequence type ST374 revealed the potential of this lineage to become a successful clone.

Database resources of the National Center for Biotechnology Information

Eric W. Sayers et al.

Summary: The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) offers a wide range of online resources for biological information and data, including GenBank (R) nucleic acid sequence database and PubMed (R) database of citations and abstracts. Entrez system allows search and retrieval operations for most of these data, with E-utilities serving as the programming interface. Additional resources such as PMC, Bookshelf, Genome Data Viewer, SRA, ClinVar, dbSNP, dbVar, Pathogen Detection, BLAST, Primer-BLAST, IgBLAST, iCn3D, and PubChem are also accessible through the NCBI home page.

The phage defence island of a multidrug resistant plasmid uses both BREX and type IV restriction for complementary protection from viruses

David M. L. Picton et al.

Summary: Bacteria have evolved various systems to defend against bacteriophages and mobile genetic elements, with genes often clustered in defense islands. Functional characterization of a defense island in a multidrug resistant plasmid of E. fergusonii has revealed a novel GmrSD-family type IV DNA modification-dependent restriction enzyme, BrxU, that provides robust phage protection. The study also presents the first structure of BrxU and demonstrates its ability to cleave a range of modified DNAs through a multi-step reaction cycle.

Temporal shifts in antibiotic resistance elements govern phage-pathogen conflicts

Kristen N. LeGault et al.

Summary: Through time-shift experiments, fluctuations in Vibrio cholerae's resistance to phages in clinical samples were discovered, with the identification of phage resistance determinants within SXT integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) that also confer antibiotic resistance. The study revealed that SXT ICEs, widespread in g-proteobacteria, encode phage defense systems linked to a single hotspot of genetic exchange, leading to the selection of a novel phage-encoded defense inhibitor and the concurrent dissemination of phage and antibiotic resistances through high-frequency SXT ICE conjugation stimulated by phage infection.
