Gyrokinetic modeling of anisotropic energetic particle driven instabilities in tokamak plasmas

B. Rettino et al.

Summary: This article investigates the effects of anisotropy in the distribution function of energetic particles on the excitation of energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic modes in tokamaks. The growth rate is found to be sensitive to the phase-space shape of the distribution function, and a comparison between numerical results, theoretical analysis, and experimental measurements is presented, along with an explanation for the differences.

Gyrokinetic modelling of the Alfven mode activity in ASDEX Upgrade with an isotropic slowing-down fast-particle distribution

F. Vannini et al.

Summary: In this study, the evolution of Alfven modes (AMs) in a realistic ASDEX Upgrade equilibrium is investigated using the ORB5 code. The results show that modeling the energetic particles (EPs) with an equivalent Maxwellian distribution does not significantly affect the AM frequency, but underestimates its growth rate by almost 30%. The isotropic slowing-down model allows for a better description of the nonlinear modification of the dominant AM frequency.

Global linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic modelling of Alfven eigenmodes in ITER

T. Hayward-Schneider et al.

Summary: Linear and nonlinear modelling of Alfvenic instabilities, particularly toroidal Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs), show that odd-parity TAEs are driven by alpha particles, while low mode number TAEs require global treatment. Multi-mode simulations predict that enhanced saturation and significant EP redistribution will occur with double the nominal EP density.

Impact of suprathermal ions on neutron yield in the pre-DT phase of ITER operation

A. R. Polevoi et al.

Summary: The assessment of neutron production during the pre-fusion power-operation (PFPO) phase was carried out for a representative set of plasma scenarios predicted by the ITER Research Plan. The study found a significant impact of the synergy between hydrogen NBI and hydrogen-minority ICRH on neutron production, and analyzed the stability of the toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAE) in PFPO plasmas.

H-mode plasmas in the pre-fusion power operation 1 phase of the ITER research plan

A. Loarte et al.

Summary: The study assessed the optimal conditions for access to and sustainment of H-mode plasmas in the PFPO-1 phase of the ITER research plan. It compared predictions with experiments carried out at JET and ASDEX Upgrade, finding reasonable agreement for global H-mode properties and scale lengths of density and temperature profiles. Specific integration issues of the PFPO-1 H-mode plasma scenarios were discussed, taking into account the impact of ITER tokamak design specifics.
