On the principle of impedance-matching for underactuated wave energy harvesting systems

Nicolas Faedo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive derivation and discussion of the impedance-matching (IM) conditions for maximum energy absorption in underactuated multi-degree-of-freedom (DoF) wave energy converters (WEC). It demonstrates the extension of the IM principle for single-DoF devices to underactuated multi-DoF systems and provides a set of optimality conditions. This work takes a fundamental step towards the general application of IM-based techniques to underactuated multi-DoF devices.

Fast nonlinear Froude-Krylov force calculation for prismatic floating platforms: a wave energy conversion application case

Giuseppe Giorgi et al.

Summary: Fast and accurate mathematical models are crucial for the design, optimization, and control of wave energy converters. Linear models become unreliable when using the energy-maximising control strategy, leading to the need for partially nonlinear models. This paper presents an alternative approach for prismatic floating platforms in the wave energy field, offering computations 2 orders of magnitude faster than real-time.

On the Approximation of Moments for Nonlinear Systems

Nicolas Faedo et al.

Summary: This article introduces four technical contributions related to the theory of moment matching, including connecting moment-based theory with weighted residual methods, providing an approximation technique for computing nonlinear moments, extending the definition of nonlinear moments, and offering an approximation technique for computing moments in explicit generator scenarios. The results are demonstrated through two examples.

Receding-Horizon Energy-Maximising Optimal Control of Wave Energy Systems Based on Moments

Nicolas Faedo et al.

Summary: This study proposes a receding-horizon optimal control framework based on the concept of a moment for real-time energy-maximising control of wave energy converters (WECs). Through a case study, it is shown that the strategy performs similarly to the ideal performance case with full knowledge of the wave excitation force, while a sensitivity analysis highlights the significant impact of errors in estimating the wave excitation force on total energy absorption.

Reactive control of wave energy devices-the modelling paradox

Christian Windt et al.

Summary: The implementation of energy maximising control systems in wave energy converter devices is crucial for their commercial operation. Linear hydrodynamic models are commonly used during the design stage due to real-time computational requirements, but they may lead to modeling paradoxes when trying to maximize power generation through exaggerated WEC motion.

Energy-maximising moment-based constrained optimal control of ocean wave energy farms

Nicolas Faedo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a moment-based energy-maximising optimal control framework for WEC arrays subject to state and input constraints. The framework allows mapping of the objective function to a finite-dimensional tractable quadratic program, ensuring the existence and uniqueness of a globally optimal solution. The proposed strategy's performance is demonstrated through a case study involving energy-maximisation for a WEC farm composed of specific WEC devices.

Sliding Mode Control of a Nonlinear Wave Energy Converter Model

Tania Demonte Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The proposed sliding mode control algorithm effectively tracks the excitation force and keeps the displacement of the device bounded, while absorbing more energy compared to other control strategies. The control law is robust and can accommodate disturbances and uncertainties in the dynamic model of the wave energy converter.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of buoy shape and Nonlinear Froude-Krylov force (NFK) on a heaving-buoy-type Wave Energy Converter (WEC), finding that conventional linear analyses may overestimate results in high amplitude wave conditions, and employing a latching control strategy at specific wave periods can maximize power extraction efficiency.
