Floating Littoral Zone (FLOLIZ): A solution to sustain macroinvertebrate communities in regulated lakes?

Quentin Salmon et al.

Summary: Artificial water-level fluctuations pose significant threats to the biodiversity and functioning of littoral zones in lake ecosystems. The use of artificial floating islands (AFI) as a solution to mitigate the deleterious effects of water-level fluctuations has gained attention from environmental managers. In this study, an artificial Floating Littoral Zone (FLOLIZ) was designed to mimic natural littoral zones and its effectiveness in supporting macroinvertebrate communities was assessed. The results showed that FLOLIZ had higher abundance, taxonomic richness, and diversity of macroinvertebrate communities compared to control littoral stations. Furthermore, the functional profiles of macroinvertebrate communities in FLOLIZ significantly differed from those in control stations. These findings highlight the importance of FLOLIZ in providing suitable habitats for macroinvertebrates and mitigating the effects of water-level fluctuations on aquatic biodiversity.

Impacts of shelter on the relative dominance of primary producers and trophic transfer efficiency in aquatic food webs: Implications for shallow lake restoration

Hui Jin et al.

Summary: Wind-induced turbulence can have strong impacts on ecological processes in shallow lake ecosystems, particularly on the interaction between primary producers and herbivores. The creation of shelter against wind can affect the relative resource availabilities for different primary producers, leading to changes in herbivore community composition and trophic transfer efficiency. This study focuses on the effect of wind-induced turbulence on aquatic primary producers and trophic transfer efficiency, and suggests that reducing turbulence may stimulate higher trophic production in shallow lakes.

Long-term zooplankton composition data reveal impacts of invasions on community composition in the Waikato lakes, New Zealand

Ian C. Duggan et al.

Summary: Data on zooplankton community composition over longer time periods are scarce. This study examined spatial and temporal trends of zooplankton communities in 39 lakes in the Waikato region of New Zealand, focusing on 8 long-term lakes with more regular sampling, and found that the greatest temporal changes in zooplankton composition during the study period were due to invasion by non-native species.
