Total soil cadmium concentrations in the Winchmore long-term phosphorus fertiliser trial are still increasing

Colin W. Gray et al.

Summary: This study investigated the rate of cadmium accumulation in soils that receive phosphorus fertiliser in New Zealand's agricultural systems and found that soil cadmium concentrations are still increasing in long-term fertiliser trials. It is recommended to continue analysing soil samples from these trials to confirm the long-term trends.

Do soil cadmium concentrations decline after phosphate fertiliser application is stopped: A comparison of long-term pasture trials in New Zealand?

R. W. McDowell et al.

Summary: Stopping phosphorus fertiliser applications can reduce soil cadmium concentrations, especially in areas with moderate rainfall. However, it may also impair pasture production. Additional strategies may be needed to quickly decrease soil cadmium levels.

Forage crops and cadmium: How changing farming systems might impact cadmium accumulation in animals

Christopher W. N. Anderson et al.

Summary: The composition of New Zealand pastures is changing, with traditional grass/clover mixes being replaced by forage herb crops. The study found significant differences in cadmium (Cd) concentration between different forage crops, with chicory having the highest concentration. However, the Cd concentrations in the animals' livers did not exceed the maximum limits set by food safety standards authorities. The management of Cd uptake by fodder crops in pastoral soils is an emerging issue for pastoral agriculture, especially in relation to meeting export market requirements.

Effect of soil cadmium on root organic acid secretion by forage crops

Nilusha Ubeynarayana et al.

Summary: The study revealed that chicory and plantain have different abilities to absorb cadmium, with chicory showing higher accumulation potential. There are significant differences in the secretion of organic acids between the two species under different Cd treatments, which further affect the Cd uptake by plant roots. Chicory has lower secretion of fumaric acid and higher secretion of acetic acid, resulting in higher Cd accumulation in the plant.

Seventy years of data from the world's longest grazed and irrigated pasture trials

Rich. W. McDowell et al.

Summary: The Winchmore trials in New Zealand have collected a vast amount of pasture and soil data over more than 70 years, which have been used in 475 publications spanning a wide range of research topics. These data are invaluable for predicting long-term soil accumulation and environmental issues, as well as guiding agricultural practices and policy-making.

Soil cadmium mobilisation by dissolved organic matter from soil amendments

Dharshika Welikala et al.

Summary: The release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from Cd contaminated soils is linked to the mobilisation of Cd-DOM complexes, with organic matter-rich soil amendments exacerbating this process. The quantity and quality of DOM determine the proportion of dissolved Cd that forms mobile complexes, affecting Cd transport from contaminated soils. Structural properties of DOM play a key role in the mobilisation of Cd from contaminated soils, as observed in this study.

Can the application of farm dairy effluent enhance cadmium leaching from soil?

Colin William Gray et al.

Summary: The study found that while applying farm dairy effluent to soils with high concentrations of dissolved organic carbon may increase the risk of cadmium leaching, the results show that the effects on cadmium loss are reduced by microbial activity and adsorption onto iron and aluminium oxides in the soil.

Prediction of soil solution concentrations and leaching losses of cadmium in agricultural soils

Colin William Gray et al.

Summary: Models were developed to predict soil solution Cd concentrations using soil parameters, with pH and OM content identified as important factors influencing Cd solubility. These models were validated using independent field trials, showing promising results but with some discrepancies likely due to physical and chemical conditions in soils.

Long-term monitoring of soil quality and trace elements to evaluate land use effects and temporal change in the Wellington region, New Zealand

John J. Drewry et al.

Summary: Soil quality monitoring in the Wellington region of New Zealand has shown significant changes in key indicators and metal concentrations over a 19-year period. The study highlights the importance of multiple samplings for detecting trends as early warnings and recommends additional sites and increased sampling frequency for robust statistical analysis in the future. This research provides valuable information for informing policy, resource management, and environmental decision-making.
