DRP1 interacts directly with BAX to induce its activation and apoptosis

Andreas Jenner et al.

Summary: BAX and DRP1 physically interact and their interaction is enhanced during apoptosis. This interaction occurs exclusively in the membrane environment and involves different surfaces of BAX. Additionally, the association between BAX and DRP1 enhances their membrane activity. Forced dimerization of BAX and DRP1 triggers their activation and translocation to mitochondria, inducing mitochondrial remodeling and permeabilization, leading to apoptosis even in the absence of apoptotic triggers. Therefore, it is proposed that DRP1 can promote apoptosis by acting as a noncanonical direct activator of BAX through physical contacts with its N-terminal region.

Mitochondrial Fission and Mitophagy Reciprocally Orchestrate Cardiac Fibroblasts Activation

Qing-Yuan Gao et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial fission plays a crucial role in cardiac fibroblasts (CF) activation, leading to increased glycolysis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Inhibiting mitochondrial fission can attenuate CF activation induced by TGF-beta 1, while ROS scavengers can reverse the increase in ROS levels triggered by TGF-beta 1 treatment. Mitochondrial fission is involved in promoting mitophagy as a defense mechanism against mitochondrial impairment, ultimately contributing to CF survival and activation maintenance.
