Trade impact of maximum residue limits in fresh fruits and vegetables

Mina Hejazi et al.

Summary: Interfering with maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides can disrupt agricultural trade, with stricter importer MRLs reducing bilateral trade, particularly between the US and EU markets. The regulatory heterogeneity in MRLs among trading nations can have a significant impact on the trade of fruits and vegetables.

Expansion of the Low-Risk Substances in the Framework of the European Pesticide Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009

Diane C. Robin et al.

Summary: The EU regulation signed in 2009 created a new category of low-risk substances, with 33 substances granted with this status through approvals and renewals. A larger list of potential low-risk substances is only exploited during renewals, and the number of low-risk substances is expected to slowly increase despite being currently low.

Use of Chitosan and Other Natural Compounds Alone or in Different Strategies with Copper Hydroxide for Control of Grapevine Downy Mildew

Gianfranco Romanazzi et al.

Summary: In this study, the 0.5%/0.8% chitosan formulation proved to be the most effective against grapevine downy mildew (GDM), while combining it with copper hydroxide helped reduce disease incidence. Chitosan serves as a promising alternative for the control of GDM in both organic and integrated disease management systems.

Pesticide residues in drinking water, their potential risk to human health and removal options

Ibrahim El-Nahhal et al.

Summary: The study highlights the presence of pesticide residues in drinking water samples from 31 countries, with a variety of insecticide, herbicide, and fungicide residues identified. Hazard indices exceeded one in many cases, indicating potential health risks to adults, children, and infants. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) proved effective in removing pesticide residues from water systems.

Do pesticides promote or hinder sustainability in agriculture? The challenge of sustainable use of pesticides in modern agriculture

Maira Lykogianni et al.

Summary: Sustainable agriculture aims to meet the growing food needs of the world population while minimizing the adverse effects of pesticides on human health and the environment. Strengthened legislation frameworks and the implementation of Integrated Pest Management principles are crucial for the sustainable use of pesticides in agriculture.

Pesticide Residues and Risk Assessment from Monitoring Programs in the Largest Production Area of Leafy Vegetables in South Korea: A 15-Year Study

Duck Woong Park et al.

Summary: In this study, pesticide residues in leafy vegetables in South Korea were monitored in the largest production area, with 17,977 samples analyzed. Residues were found in 15.7% of samples, with 2.4% exceeding the specified maximum residue limits. The most frequently detected pesticides were Azoxystrobin, dimethomorph, and procymidone, with procymidone, diniconazole, and lufenuron most commonly exceeding the MRLs.

Considerations and Regulatory Approaches in the USA and in the EU for dsRNA-Based Externally Applied Pesticides for Plant Protection

Antje Dietz-Pfeilstetter et al.

Summary: With increasing pest and pathogen challenges, there is a need for innovative and sustainable solutions for plant protection, such as RNA interference-based pesticides. These products target organisms specifically through the interaction of siRNAs with target RNAs. The regulatory frameworks for pesticide authorization in the US and EU are evolving to address the use of dsRNA-based pesticides.
