Controlling the Reduction of Chelated Uranyl to Stable Tetravalent Uranium Coordination Complexes in Aqueous Solution

Korey P. Carter et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interactions between octadentate hydroxypyridinone (HOPO) and catecholamide (CAM) chelating ligands and uranium through various spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. Results showed controlled binding and stabilization of U-IV with different chelators, with the 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) forming a tetravalent uranium complex inert to oxidation in acidic solution. Additionally, U-IV was found to be less extensively stabilized at physiological pH, with a mix of U-IV and U-VI complexes observed.

Bifunctional 3-Hydroxy-4-Pyridinones as Potential Selective Iron(III) Chelators: Solution Studies and Comparison with Other Metals of Biological and Environmental Relevance

Anna Irto et al.

Summary: By investigating the binding ability of bifunctional 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones with Cu2+ and Fe3+, different speciation schemes were determined, showcasing the potential selectivity of these ligands towards Fe3+ as promising iron-chelating agents. The study also suggested that 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinones could avoid competition with essential metal cations like Cu2+ and Zn2+, making them advantageous in biological and environmental applications.

Structural and spectroscopic characterization of an einsteinium complex

Korey P. Carter et al.

Summary: Transplutonium elements are a group of metals at the edge of the periodic table, with properties that are less predictable due to their scarcity and radioactivity. Studies on the heaviest element einsteinium highlight the need for further exploration of actinide elements, especially those that are scarce and short-lived.

Foliar application of 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone Fe-chelate [Fe(mpp)3] induces responses at the root level amending iron deficiency chlorosis in soybean

Carla S. Santos et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of the Fe chelate [Fe(mpp)(3)] in alleviating iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) in soybean, improving chlorophyll content, plant growth, root responses, and nutrient uptake. Additionally, [Fe(mpp)(3)] application led to increased seed yield at full maturity compared to FeEDDHA, indicating its potential as a sustainable solution for IDC in alkaline soil conditions.

Development of a Flexible Tripodal Hydroxypyridinone Ligand with Cyclohexane Framework: Complexation, Solution Thermodynamics, Spectroscopic and DFT Studies

Dibyajit Dash et al.

Summary: A new tripodal siderophore-mimic hexadentate chelator, TACH-1,2-HOPO, was designed and synthesized, and its solution thermodynamics and photophysical properties with lanthanide ions were experimentally and theoretically determined. The formation of lanthanide complexes and the bonding behavior between lanthanide ions and TACH-1,2-HOPO were investigated, showing weaker covalent Ln-L bonds with the trend Lu>Gd>La. Theoretical calculations by DFT supported the experimental results and provided insight into the protonation constants and spectral data.

Combining the Best of Two Chelating Titans: A Hydroxypyridinone-Decorated Macrocyclic Ligand for Efficient and Concomitant Complexation and Sensitized Luminescence of f-Elements

Leticia Arnedo-Sanchez et al.

Summary: An ideal chelator for f-elements should have rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. The synthesized macrocyclic ligand forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides and a representative late actinide, with EXAFS data showing an increase in bond lengths. Luminescence studies indicate the presence of water molecules in the inner metal coordination spheres.

DGA resin capacity factors for Ac, Am and Th under tetravalent actinide selective complexation

Rikard Malmbeck et al.

Summary: The resin capacity factors of Ac, Am, and Th on the DGA extraction chromatographic resin were investigated in this work. The addition of elevated concentrations of the selective tetravalent complexant, 343HOPO, decreased the resin capacity factors but remained high enough to support a selective removal of a tetravalent element. Loading effects of Th on the resin could be fully scavenged by the addition of 343HOPO complexant, indicating that selective tetravalent complexation with the DGA system can handle separation steps for Ac involving significant amounts of Th.
