UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

An update on the function and regulation of methylerythritol phosphate and mevalonate pathways and their evolutionary dynamics

Xiaojun Pu et al.

Summary: Isoprenoids are a diverse class of organic compounds involved in photosynthesis, respiration, growth, development, and stress responses in plants. The mevalonate (MVA) and methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathways play key roles in isoprenoid synthesis and plant growth, development, and stress responses. The emergence of the MVA pathway is a crucial evolutionary event in plants, facilitating land colonization, embryo development, and adaptation to new environments.

The exploration of methyl jasmonate on the tanshinones biosynthesis in hair roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and Salvia castanea f. tomentosa Stib

Zhuoni Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (SMB) and Salvia castanea f. tomentosa Stib (SCT) to methyl jasmonate (MJ) treatment. The results showed that MJ can promote the accumulation of tanshinones and related ingredients in both SMB and SCT. Although there was no significant difference in the overall response to MJ between the two, there were differences in individual components, possibly due to variations in the response of secondary metabolism-related genes to MJ.

Elicitation of solid callus cultures of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge with salicylic acid and a synthetic auxin (1-naphthaleneacetic acid)

Piotr Szymczyk et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the effects of salicylic acid and synthetic auxin on tanshinone levels in Salvia miltiorrhiza callus cultures. Salicylic acid increased tanshinone content, while the synthetic auxin did not. The research indicates a potential for enhancing tanshinone production through salicylic acid elicitation.
