Recent advances in photocatalytic remediation of emerging organic pollutants using semiconducting metal oxides: an overview

Komargoud Prakruthi et al.

Summary: Currently, untreated or partly treated wastewater from households and commercial sources containing unknown and complex compounds is being discharged into aquatic environments, leading to severe environmental problems that impact human health. Photocatalysis, as an advanced oxidation process, has emerged as an efficient method for removing emerging organic pollutants. Semiconducting nanometal oxides have become pioneering photocatalysts due to their large active surface sites, flexible oxidation states, and easy preparation.

Nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide with pure monoclinic-ZrO2 and pure tetragonal-ZrO2 for selective adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline

Dong Hao et al.

Summary: By controlling the dosage of triethanolamine, two nanocomposites of monoclinic-ZrO2@rGO and tetragonal-ZrO2@rGO were successfully prepared, with the tetragonal-ZrO2@rGO exhibiting a higher adsorptive amount for OTC. Both nanocomposites show a selective uptake of OTC among tetracycline antibiotics, with adsorption reaching equilibrium in 15 minutes and being independent of pH in the range of 4-8. The interactions between OTC and the nanocomposites were revealed through Fourier transform infrared and XRD analysis, with surface complexation, pi-pi, and cation-pi bonding interactions playing a crucial role.

Novel 2D/2D g-C3N4/Bi4NbO8Cl nano-composite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of oxytetracycline under visible LED light irradiation

Ankush Majumdar et al.

Summary: A novel visible-light-responsive 2D/2D g-C3N4/Bi4NbO8Cl nano-composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized and demonstrated high photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards oxytetracycline. The improved performance can be attributed to the formation of a type-II heterojunction, which enhances visible light absorption and reduces recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Additionally, the nano-composite exhibited good stability after multiple cycles of degradation experiments, showing potential for low-cost and energy-efficient environmental remediation applications.

N, S-GQDs and Au nanoparticles co-modified ultrathin Bi2MoO6 nanosheet with enhanced charge transport dynamics for full-spectrum-light-driven molecular oxygen activation

Bisheng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, N and S co-doped graphene quantum dots and gold nanoparticles were successfully modified on atomic ultrathin Bi2MoO6 nanosheets, leading to enhanced charge carrier transfer and light harvest for exceptional photocatalytic performance. The hybrid material exhibited significantly higher reaction rates for OTC degradation under visible light and near-infrared light irradiation, with excellent catalytic performance for wastewater treatment and high photostability. The mechanism underlying the improved photocatalytic performance was attributed to broadened photoresponse range and enhanced light absorption intensity, as well as accelerated charge carrier transfer efficiency facilitated by the hybrid structure.

Vladimir Stankov et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) using direct photolysis (UV/C) and photobased advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) (UV/C/H2O2 and UV-C/S2O82-). Results showed that AOPs were more effective in OTC degradation compared to direct photolysis. The byproducts formed during degradation had varying impacts on toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri, while the biodegradability was less affected.
