Very close I•••As and I•••Sb interactions in trimethylpnictogen-pentafluoroiodobenzene cocrystals

Maciej Bujak et al.

Summary: The cocrystals (CH3)3As•C6F5I and (CH3)3Sb•C6F5I exhibit very unique I•••As and I•••Sb interactions, which are the shortest C-I•••As and C-I•••Sb halogen bonds found to date in experimentally characterized molecular (co)crystals. Comparisons with other compounds further validate the occurrence and hierarchy of these specific interactions.

The Bifurcated σ-Hole•••σ-Hole Stacking Interactions

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the bifurcated sigma-hole and sigma-hole stacking interactions between organosulfur molecules were investigated using a combined method of the Cambridge Structural Database search and quantum chemical calculation. It was found that the binding energy of the bifurcated sigma-hole stacking interaction is generally lower than the sum of the binding energies of two monofurcated sigma-hole stacking interactions. The electrostatic energy contribution increases significantly and the dispersion component decreases significantly for the bifurcated sigma-hole stacking interaction compared to the linear monofurcated sigma-hole stacking interaction. Another important finding is that the spin-component scaled zeroth-order symmetry-adapted perturbation theory performs well in studying the bifurcated sigma-hole stacking interactions. This work provides valuable information for the design and synthesis of novel organic optical and electronic materials.

Anti-Electrostatic Pi-Hole Bonding: How Covalency Conquers Coulombics

Frank Weinhold

Summary: This study demonstrates that intermolecular bonding attraction at pi-bonded centers can occur between closed-shell ions of like charge, forming locally stable complexes. This attraction violates classical electrostatic expectations and is associated with 3-center/4-electron interactions. The study also shows that short-range covalency (charge transfer) is the cause of this attraction, rather than the Coulombic properties of unperturbed monomers.

Analysis of Oxygen-Pnictogen Bonding with Full Bond Path Topological Analysis of the Electron Density

Brent Lindquist-Kleissler et al.

Summary: Various methods are available to study bonding in inorganic compounds, with topological analysis of the electron density providing valuable insights. The analysis of electron density, Laplacian, and ellipticity at critical points reveals counter-intuitive trends in compounds with different oxygen-pnictogen bond types. Evaluating real-space functions along the bond path resolves discrepancies, and robust results can also be obtained using less computationally demanding density functional theory calculations. This study is expected to benefit inorganic chemists involved in synthesizing and evaluating novel bonding interactions, especially those involving heavy main-group elements.
