Organelle degradation in the lens by PLAAT phospholipases

Hideaki Morishita et al.

Summary: The study reveals the essential role of phospholipases in the PLAAT family in the degradation of lens organelles, with Plaat1 in zebrafish and PLAAT3 in mice translocating to organelles before inducing their rupture and degradation. This process is mediated by Hsf4 and is crucial for maintaining the transparency and refractive function of the lens in vertebrates.

Antioxidant Synergy of Mitochondrial Phospholipase PNPLA8/iPLA2γ with Fatty Acid-Conducting SLC25 Gene Family Transporters

Martin Jaburek et al.

Summary: The iPLA2 gamma protein, also known as PNPLA8, plays crucial roles in the mitochondrial matrix, including antioxidant functions, lipid peroxidation association, membrane remodeling, and generation of specific lipid second messengers. It is directly stimulated by H2O2, activated through redox signaling, and works synergistically with mitochondrial uncoupling proteins to maintain cellular redox balance. Additionally, it is involved in FA beta-oxidation in pancreatic beta-cells and cytoprotective roles in the heart and brain.

Phosphorylation of human phospholipase A1 DDHD1 at newly identified phosphosites affects its subcellular localization

Naoki Matsumoto et al.

Summary: Phospholipase A1 (PLA1) hydrolyzes glycerophospholipid fatty acids in cellular membranes and genetic mutations in DDHD1 gene result in hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). This study identified multiple phosphorylation sites in human DDHD1 and the protein kinases responsible for regulating these sites, suggesting potential implications for HSP pathogenesis.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.
