Volatile Iridium and Platinum MOCVD Precursors: Chemistry, Thermal Properties, Materials and Prospects for Their Application in Medicine

Ksenya I. Karakovskaya et al.

Summary: Interest in iridium and platinum has been increasing due to their unique properties, such as exceptional chemical inertia and corrosion resistance, high biological compatibility, and mechanical strength, which are the basis for their application in medical practice. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is a promising method for the fabrication of Ir and Pt nanomaterials, multilayers, and heterostructures, with advantages including precise control of material composition and microstructure at relatively low temperatures onto non-planar substrates. The development of MOCVD processes is closely linked with the chemistry of volatile precursors, specifically designed coordination and organometallic compounds.

Preparation of PdNPs doped chitosan-based composite hydrogels as highly efficient catalysts for reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Junlin Zhu et al.

Summary: A series of Pd nanoparticle (PdNPs) doped chitosan (CS)-based composite hydrogel catalysts were successfully prepared in this study, showing improved catalytic activity and reusability compared to traditional CS-PdNPs catalysts. Composite hydrogel catalysts containing carbon nanotubes demonstrated the best catalytic performance with the smallest particle size of PdNPs. This work provides new insights for the development of stable and efficient precious metal nanoparticle catalysts for aqueous phase catalysis.

The use of noble metal coatings and nanoparticles for the modification of medical implant materials

Tamara V. Basova et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of noble metals and silver and gold nanoparticles to improve the performance of medical implants in orthopedic and reconstructive surgery. It analyzes the current use and limitations of traditional biomaterials, while exploring alternative solutions. The focus is on the analysis of noble metals as biocompatible and antibacterial materials, and the importance of modifying implant surfaces with thin films and nanoparticles for future implant development.

Vitruvian precursor for gas phase deposition: structural insights into iridium β-diketonate volatilities

Evgeniia S. Vikulova et al.

Summary: New data on the thermodynamic properties of a series of volatile iridium(i) complexes have been obtained, suggesting ways to estimate the difference in heat capacities between gas and crystal phases. The influence of different terminal groups on the volatility of the complexes was explained through detailed crystal packing analysis and quantum chemical calculation of crystal lattice energies. This study broadens our understanding of the relationship between the structure and thermal properties of volatile precursors, which is useful for further tuning effective compounds for metal-organic chemical vapor deposition purposes.
