The factor structure of the macaque social responsiveness scale-revised predicts social behavior and personality dimensions

Summary: An exploratory factor analysis on the mSRS-R in a large sample of male rhesus macaques (N = 233) yielded three factors: Poor Social Motivation, Poor Social Attractiveness, and Inappropriate Behavior. These factors closely mapped to social behavior and personality dimensions in rhesus macaques, supporting the instrument's convergent and discriminant validity. Animals with higher Poor Social Motivation tended to be more isolated, while those with higher Poor Social Attractiveness were less likely to engage in play but more likely to engage in grooming with conspecifics. Inappropriate Behavior did not predict any specific behavioral measure. Animals with higher Poor Social Motivation and Poor Social Attractiveness had less sociable personalities, while animals with more Inappropriate Behavior displayed more confidence and irritability.

Assessment of medical morbidities in a rhesus monkey model of naturally occurring low sociality

A study on monkeys with different sociality levels found that low-social monkeys are more prone to traumatic injuries. These results align with reports of individuals with autism experiencing more traumatic injuries and peer bullying, and support the validity of this monkey model.
