Curcumin and its derivatives in cancer therapy: Potentiating antitumor activity of cisplatin and reducing side effects

Asal Jalal Abadi et al.

Summary: Curcumin, isolated from Curcuma longa, has potent tumor-suppressor activity and can decrease the adverse impacts of cisplatin (CP) while enhancing its antitumor activity. Curcumin reduces ROS levels to prevent apoptosis in normal cells, inhibits inflammation, and reduces various toxicities caused by CP. Additionally, curcumin potentiates CP cytotoxicity and suppresses tumor-promoting pathways to prevent drug resistance.

The disruption and hyperpermeability of blood-labyrinth barrier mediates cisplatin-induced ototoxicity

Jiayi Gu et al.

Summary: This study verified the functional and morphological impairment of the stria vascularis induced by cisplatin and explored the underlying mechanisms. The increased vascular permeability and disruption of blood-labyrinth barrier were identified as critical contributors to cisplatin-induced hearing loss. These findings provide a novel therapeutic target for preventing cisplatin-related ototoxicity.

Rebirth of Aspirin Synthesis By-Product: Prickly Poly(salicylic acid) Nanoparticles as Self-Anticancer Drug Carrier

Xinru You et al.

Summary: Researchers successfully polymerized salicylic acid, a functional component of aspirin, into poly (salicylic acid) to create prickly nanoparticles that are non-toxic to normal and cancer cells, and inhibit tumor growth. Drug-loaded prickly nanoparticles exhibit high blood vessel penetration, tumor penetration, and tumor accumulation, achieving significant tumor inhibition without side effects.

Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity: Updates on molecular mechanisms and otoprotective strategies

Qing Tang et al.

Summary: Cisplatin, an effective antitumor drug for solid malignant tumors, is known to cause ototoxicity, which manifests as progressive, bilateral, and irreversible hearing loss. The ototoxicity is primarily related to reactive oxygen species production and activation of the apoptotic pathway in cochlear tissues. Despite protective strategies being developed, systemic administration of drugs for hearing protection may weaken cisplatin's anticancer effect.
