Fitness consequences of hybridization between wild Newfoundland and farmed European and North American Atlantic salmon

Shahinur S. Islam et al.

Summary: The study found that there were no significant differences in growth and survival between farmed and wild Atlantic salmon. In tank environments, both European and North American farmed salmon showed greater dominance and growth than wild salmon. However, in stream environments, the competition imposed by North American farmed salmon and related hybrids on wild fish appeared to be less than that imposed by the European strain and related hybrids.

Early-life fitness trait variation among divergent European and North American farmed and Newfoundland wild Atlantic salmon populations

Shahinur S. Islam et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that interbreeding between domesticated and wild Atlantic salmon can have negative impacts on native populations, while there are minimal differences in fitness-related traits between F-1 hybrids and their maternal wild/farmed strains, indicating that early-life fitness consequences of F-1 hybridization are largely influenced by maternal effects.
