Processed pseudogenes: A substrate for evolutionary innovation Retrotransposition contributes to genome evolution by propagating pseudogene sequences with rich regulatory potential throughout the genome

Robin-Lee Troskie et al.

Summary: Processed pseudogenes may disperse coding and noncoding sequences rich with regulatory potential throughout the human genome through the activity of long interspersed element-1 retrotransposons. Although these sequences may currently lack functionality, the potential for future biological activity development remains. The dynamic evolution of certain processed pseudogenes into coding and noncoding genes and regulatory elements has implications in a wide range of biological and pathological processes.

Dnmt1 has de novo activity targeted to transposable elements

Chuck Haggerty et al.

Summary: Dnmt1 demonstrates de novo methylation activity with specific targeting towards retrotransposons, depending on Uhrf1. Its genomic recruitment overlaps with regions enriched for Uhrf1, Trim28, and H3K9 trimethylation. These findings suggest that Dnmt1 can catalyze DNA methylation in both de novo and maintenance contexts, particularly at retrotransposons.

Impact of DNA methylation on 3D genome structure

Diana Buitrago et al.

Summary: This study utilized yeast as a model system lacking DNA methylation machinery to demonstrate the intrinsic effects of methylation on chromatin structure. Despite the absence of machinery for reading and processing methylation marks, induced DNA methylation showed a conserved pattern, indicating its inherent role in modulating chromatin structure.
