Effects of GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms in glutathione levels and breast cancer development in Brazilian patients

Leticia Madureira Pacholak et al.

Summary: The study found that polymorphisms in GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes were not associated with breast cancer susceptibility, and did not have a significant impact on GSH levels in patients. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between these polymorphisms and breast cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Contemporary hormonal contraception and cervical cancer in women of reproductive age

Lisa Iversen et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of any hormonal contraceptives increases the risk of cervical cancer, especially in current or recent users. The risk is higher with combined contraceptives compared to progestin-only contraceptives, affecting both adenocarcinoma and squamous cancer.

Association of GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene polymorphisms with COVID-19 susceptibility and its outcome

Mohammad Abbas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene polymorphism in COVID-19 susceptibility and outcomes. The frequency of GSTM1(-/-), GSTT1(-/-), and GSTM1(-/-)/GSTT1(-/-) was higher in severe COVID-19 patients, but no significant association was observed. Patients with the GSTT1(-/-) genotype showed higher mortality, with death being 2.28-fold higher in this group according to the Cox hazard model.

Distribution of HPV Genotypes Differs Depending on Behavioural Factors among Young Women

Laura Bergqvist et al.

Summary: The study found that behavioral factors such as smoking, age, and sexual debut are associated with genotype-specific HPV prevalence in unvaccinated women. Delaying sexual debut can reduce the risk of HPV16 infection, but has little impact on other genotypes. Contraceptive methods seem to have no effect on HR-HPV positivity.

Human papillomavirus infection predicts a better survival rate in patients with oropharyngeal cancer

Piotr Kedzierawski et al.

Summary: Research has shown that HPV infection is a significant predictor of clinical outcomes in oropharyngeal cancer patients, significantly impacting disease-free and overall survival. For HPV-positive patients, age and smoking are important risk factors for recurrence, while for HPV-negative patients, clinical stage and systemic therapy application play a crucial role in influencing recurrence.

Human papillomavirus genotypes and the risk factors associated with multicentric intraepithelial lesions of the lower genital tract: a retrospective study

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with multicentric lesions were associated with menopause, a history of malignant tumors beyond the lower genital tract, and multiple HPV infections. The most common genotype was HPV16, especially in high-grade multicentric lesions. Ultimately, HPV51 infection was identified as a risk factor for detecting multicentric lesions.

Relationship between GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms and HPV infection: a systematic review

Ana Paula Reolon Bortolli et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the relationship between GSTT1 and GSTM1 and HPV infection in women, finding a probable association between single nucleotide polymorphisms and cervical lesions or cancer, and that GSTT1 null alleles were more common in women with more aggressive HPV.
