An Updated Staging System for Cephalochordate Development: One Table Suits Them All

Joao E. Carvalho et al.

Summary: Chordates are divided into three subphyla: Vertebrata, Tunicata, and Cephalochordata. Phylogenetically, Cephalochordata, commonly known as lancelets, are closely related to Vertebrata and Tunicata. Despite being important models for understanding the evolutionary history of chordates, there is still no universally adopted staging system and nomenclature for developing lancelets. In this study, the development of the European lancelet was characterized and a streamlined developmental staging system was proposed, which could be applicable to other lancelet species.

The Ontology of the Amphioxus Anatomy and Life Cycle (AMPHX)

Stephanie Bertrand et al.

Summary: Amphioxus, as the marine animal representing the earliest diverging evolutionary lineage of chordates, is an important animal model for evolutionary developmental biology studies. The constructed Amphioxus ontology (AMPHX) will be used to annotate gene expression patterns and phenotypes, serving as a valuable tool for research in understanding the origin and diversification of vertebrates. Adoption of the AMPHX and recommendations for future updates and improvements from the scientific community are encouraged.
