Complex histories of gene flow and a mitochondrial capture event in a nonsister pair of birds

Michael J. Andersen et al.

Summary: Hybridization, introgression, and reciprocal gene flow are increasingly observed as parts of the speciation process, leading to mitonuclear discordance. Genomic approaches provide insight into adaptation during and after speciation, with neutral demographic processes playing a key role in complex population histories. Research on Australian and Indonesian populations of the Spectacled Monarch and New Guinean Spot-winged Monarch reveal historical gene flow events, indicating genetic exchange between species.

Evolutionary Responses to Warming

Angela McGaughran et al.

Summary: In the current Anthropocene epoch, human activities are driving new climatic trajectories, leading to hotter conditions and a range of impacts on the biosphere. Organisms may respond to these changes with acclimation, adaptation, relocation, or extinction, as new abiotic gradients are established. Temperature changes may lead to extirpations, extinctions, and range shifts, but can also prompt phenotypic or behavioral plasticity as species adapt to new conditions. Recent genomic research suggests that some species can evolve rapidly in response to environmental change, offering insights into how temperature might accelerate evolution in the Anthropocene.

Evidence for multiple colonisations and Wolbachia infections shaping the genetic structure of the widespread butterfly Polyommatus icarus in the British Isles

Saad Arif et al.

Summary: The study reveals distinct geographical structuring of CO1 haplogroups in the Polyommatus Icarus butterfly in the British Isles, with evidence of different demographic histories of mitochondrial versus nuclear DNA. While mtDNA-Wolbachia associations in northern Britain could explain the geographic structuring of mtDNA, nuclear genomic structuring suggests multiple colonization events. This two-stage colonization scenario has been proposed to explain genetic diversity in British flora and fauna. Additionally, preliminary evidence for potential Wolbachia-induced feminization in the Outer Hebrides is presented.
