Microscopic and Macroscopic Characterization of Grain Boundary Energy and Strength in Silicon Carbide via Machine-Learning Techniques

Matthew Guziewski et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the energy and strength of silicon carbide grain boundaries using a combination of high-throughput atomistic simulations, macroscopic and microscopic descriptors, and machine-learning techniques. Results show that while microscopic descriptors are more effective in describing grain boundary energy, a combination of macroscopic and microscopic descriptors can accurately predict grain boundary strength.

A simplified methodology for the modeling of interfaces of elementary metals

Yoyo Hinuma et al.

Summary: An algorithm is proposed to generate reasonable atomic-level interface models using minimal first-principles calculations. By filtering surface charge densities and selecting models with maximum overlap between slabs, initial models with desirable rigid-body translations are obtained and relaxed to achieve reasonable interface models. This approach successfully generated initial models for various orientations of homointerfaces and reproduced key features of specific grain boundaries. Further modifications are expected to enhance the automated interface model generation process.

Anataselike Grain Boundary Structure in Rutile Titanium Dioxide

Georg Schusteritsch et al.

Summary: By combining advanced electron microscopy techniques with ab initio random structure searching, the atomic structure of a Sigma 13 (221) [1 (1) over bar0] grain boundary in rutile TiO2 was successfully determined. A unique nanoscale phase at the grain boundary was identified, with striking similarities to the bulk anatase crystal structure, demonstrating a path to embed nanoscale anatase into rutile TiO2.
