Light and scanning electron microscopy-based foliar morpho-anatomical comparison of selected family Rosaceae members distributed in District Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan

Shabnum Shaheen et al.

Summary: The present study characterized the morpho-anatomical features of selected Rosaceae members in Lahore through light and scanning electron microscopy, revealing significant variations such as in the shape and size of epidermal cells, stomatal types and sizes, and guard cell lengths. These diverse anatomical features can serve as valuable taxonomic tools for the identification of plants at specific and generic levels.

Micromorphological characters variation of lemma and palea in subtribe of Loliinae (Poaceae)

Raheleh Tabaripour et al.

Summary: The subtribe Loliinae, consisting of around 600 species, is one of the largest subtribes of the Poeae tribe. Festuca genus, closely related to Lolium, Castellia, and Vulpia, has a complex taxonomic history. The study used SEM techniques to evaluate micromorphology of lemma and palea surfaces of 33 species in the subtribe, revealing difficulties in identification due to morphological similarities. Some micromorphological features were found to be important for species identification, but overall, the features were not sufficient for subgeneric or sectional delimitation of the Festuca genus.

Taxonomic implication of leaf epidermal anatomy of selected taxa of Scrophulariaceae from Pakistan

Fazal Ullah et al.

Summary: This study investigated leaf epidermis anatomical characteristics and taxonomic significance of four species from four different genera of the Scrophulariaceae family collected in northern Pakistan. By examining qualitative and quantitative foliar epidermal features, differences in stomata and trichomes were identified, leading to successful species delimitation and identification using principal component analysis and cluster analysis based on micromorphological characters. A taxonomic key based on foliar epidermal characters was provided for distinguishing and identifying the studied taxa.

Comparative taxonomic variation in fruits and seeds' surface morphology among populations of alpine Rosa sericea complex (Rosaceae)

Fazal Ullah et al.

Summary: This research examined the surface morphological features of fruits and seeds of Rosa sericea complex using scanning electron microscopy, identifying 44 different characteristics. Principal component analysis simplified the relationship between populations. The study found that stomata and trichomes had higher densities on the dorsal and ventral parts of the seeds compared to the lateral parts.
