Bimetallic platinum/iridium modified mesoporous catalysts applied in the hydrogenation of HMF

Brenda Ledesma et al.

Summary: The study investigated the catalytic transformation of HMF to produce 2,5-DMF over bimetallic (PtIr) and monometallic (Pt) catalysts supported on CMK-3 and SBA-15 mesoporous materials. It was found that PtIr-CMK-3 catalyst exhibited excellent activity, selectivity, and stability in this process, with well-reduced and highly dispersed metallic particles on the surface of supports having large surface area and narrow pore size distribution. The PtIr alloy species catalytic sites were very active and selective towards the formation of 2,5-DMF.

Seaweed-based cellulose: Applications, and future perspectives

Ravi S. Baghel et al.

Summary: This review summarizes and discusses cellulose extracted from various types of seaweeds, including content, extraction strategies, and cellulose-based products. Some seaweed species were found to have significant cellulose content (9-34% dry weight), and the properties of seaweed cellulose-based products were comparable to products prepared from plant-based cellulose.

Medium effect on acid degradation of cotton and wood celluloses

Yung-Ho Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of cotton and wood celluloses treated with hydrogen chloride in different media for different durations. The use of alcohols increased the cellulosic sugar content in the hydrolysate compared to water, but resulted in lower cellulose recovery rates. The crystallinity indices of celluloses changed slightly after degradation, and the weight-average degree of polymerization plateaued after a certain treatment time.

Highly Efficient 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Production from Glucose over Bifunctional SnOx/C catalyst

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: A bifunctional solid acid tin oxide/carbon catalyst, prepared from glucose as a carbon source, showed efficient catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with high conversion and yield under optimized conditions. The catalyst also demonstrated excellent recyclability and versatility for one-pot transformation of cellulose to HMF, attributed to its highly dispersed SnOx nanoparticles, suitable ratio of Bronsted to Lewis acids, and accessible pore-structure.
