Integrative approaches for species delimitation in Ascomycota

Sajeewa S. N. Maharachchikumbura et al.

Summary: Disturbances caused by human activities result in biodiversity loss and call for more effective ways to discover and delimit species. The paper reviews the main approaches used to delimit species in the phylum Ascomycota, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each species concept. The advancement in phylogenetic methods has increased the rate of species discovery, but challenges such as gene tree heterogeneity still hinder species delimitation in low-rank phylogenies.

Parasexual reproduction in Alternaria solani: Simple sequence repeat molecular evidence for haploidization

Dongmei Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found multiple alleles in Alternaria solani isolates through SSR analysis, indicating a possible parasexual cycle. Using codominant SSR markers, the research simulated the mitosis process of A. solani with single-conidium subculture. The changes in allele number at locus As-95236 support the existence of parasexual reproduction in A. solani.

Habitat-scale heterogeneity maintains fungal endophyte diversity in two native prairie legumes

Mara DeMers et al.

Summary: The composition of fungal endophyte communities within prairie plants is influenced by complex interactions between fungal taxa, host plants, and the abiotic environment. Research showed that diversity and structure of these communities are affected by geographical location along a temperature and precipitation gradient, with only very large spatial scales showing dispersal limitations. The study also indicated that host species have a relatively small effect compared to other factors, but distinct communities were maintained within co-occurring species.
