Mutual interplay between ArcA and σE orchestrates envelope stress response in Shewanella oneidensis

Huihui Liang et al.

Summary: Our study unveils a previously undescribed mechanism in Shewanella oneidensis for envelope defect resulting from loss of Arc, a two-component regulatory system crucial for respiration. It demonstrates an interplay between sigma(E) and ArcA, highlighting their functional interconnectedness in response to envelope stress. By showing that sigma(E) becomes essential for viability in the absence of ArcA, we underscore the importance of multiple regulatory systems working together as an interconnected safety net.

Activation of regulator ArcA in the presence of hypochlorite in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium

Carolina E. Cabezas et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is the main mechanism for efficient disinfectants to kill bacteria, and bacteria activate resistance mechanisms in response to damage caused by oxidative stress. Many bacteria use highly conserved strategies to survive oxidative stress, with genomic responses triggered by signals transduced through Two Component Systems (TCS).

Colistin kills bacteria by targeting lipopolysaccharide in the cytoplasmic membrane

Akshay Sabnis et al.

Summary: Colistin is a last-resort antibiotic with poor efficacy due to growing resistance. Recent research has shown that colistin exerts bactericidal activity by targeting lipopolysaccharide in the cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria. These findings offer insight into novel approaches for enhancing therapeutic outcomes.

Global Transcriptional Regulators Fine-Tune the Translational and Metabolic Efficiency for Optimal Growth of Escherichia coli

Mahesh S. Iyer et al.

Summary: Global transcriptional regulators, including FNR, ArcA, and IHF, play a fundamental role in sustaining translational and metabolic efficiency in Escherichia coli under glucose fermentative conditions. These regulators are crucial for maintaining nitrogen homeostasis, governing gene expression, and controlling metabolic bottleneck steps. Disruption of these regulators leads to lowered growth rates and affects glucose uptake due to imbalances in ribosome and metabolic proteome allocation.
