Versatile lifestyles of Edwardsiella: Free-living, pathogen, and core bacterium of the aquatic resistome

Ka Yin Leung et al.

Summary: Edwardsiella species in aquatic environments can exist as planktonic cells or biofilms, facing various stresses and possessing the ability to transmit pathogenic and antibiotic resistance genes. Understanding the transitions of Edwardsiella in different environments can enhance our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of other aquatic bacteria.

An overview on mastitis-associated Escherichia coli: Pathogenicity, host immunity and the use of alternative therapies

Nawel Zaatout

Summary: Escherichia coli is a major cause of bovine mastitis and its pathogenicity is determined by the interaction between its virulence factors and host factors. The existence of the mammary pathogenic E. coli (MPEC) pathotype is still debated. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of E. coli induces an immune response and can be targeted for alternative treatments against mastitis-associated E. coli. The ability of E. coli to resist conventional antibiotics highlights the need for alternative therapies.

Anti-CRISPR proteins as a therapeutic agent against drug-resistant bacteria

Pallavi Vyas et al.

Summary: The continuous use of antibiotics has led to multidrug resistance among bacterial populations, posing a significant threat to public health. Anti-CRISPR proteins have been identified as potential therapeutic agents against drug-resistant bacteria.

Interplay between ferric uptake regulator Fur and horizontally acquired virulence regulator EsrB coordinates virulence gene expression in Edwardsiella piscicida

Shuai Shao et al.

Summary: In Edwardsiella piscicida, iron uptake systems are co-regulated by the ferric uptake regulator (Fur), while the response regulator EsrB activates the expression of virulence systems and iron uptake systems to mitigate iron shortage. The interaction between Fur and EsrB is essential for bacterial fitness during infection and survival in seawater environments.

Bacteriophage-encoded enzymes destroying bacterial cell membranes and walls, and their potential use as antimicrobial agents

Lukasz Grabowski et al.

Summary: The emergence of pathogenic bacteria resistant to most, if not all, known antibiotics is a significant medical issue. Developing novel antibacterial therapies, such as using bacteriophage-encoded enzymes, is crucial for future efficient treatment of bacterial infections. Understanding the biological functions and properties of these enzymes is essential for their potential use as antibacterial agents.

Isolation of a Virulent Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. masoucida Bacteriophage and Its Application in Phage Therapy in Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)

Zhenhe Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the newly isolated A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida phage vB_AsM_ZHF exhibited potent antibacterial effect against the pathogen both in vitro and in vivo, reducing bacterial burden and inflammatory response in infected turbot. This phage showed promising potential as an alternative therapeutic agent to antibiotics for controlling multidrug-resistant A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida infections in the aquaculture industry.

The Safety and Toxicity of Phage Therapy: A Review of Animal and Clinical Studies

Dan Liu et al.

Summary: Phage therapy has garnered renewed interest due to increasing rates of antibiotic resistant bacteria infections. Safety and toxicity data associated with phage therapy in animals and humans have been systematically reviewed from English language publications between 2008-2021. While some adverse events were found in relation to phage therapy, serious events were extremely rare, highlighting the need for structured safety and tolerability endpoints in the therapeutic use of phages. Comprehensive and standardized reporting of potential toxicities associated with phage therapy has generally been lacking in published literature.
