Functional characterization of a high-affinity iron transporter (PiFTR) from the endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica and its role in plant growth and development

Nidhi Verma et al.

Summary: The high-affinity iron transporter PiFTR from Piriformospora indica plays a crucial role in facilitating iron uptake in rice under low iron conditions, offering potential avenues for enhancing plant growth in iron-deficient environments. Knockdown of PiFTR resulted in reduced iron transport to rice plants colonized by P. indica, leading to poorer plant health and performance compared to wild type PiFTR.

A review on bioremediation approach for heavy metal detoxification and accumulation in plants

P. R. Yaashikaa et al.

Summary: The accumulation of toxic heavy metals in soil and water is a serious environmental problem, causing harmful effects on plants and animals. Phytoremediation is an effective method to detoxify and accumulate heavy metals in contaminated ecosystems. This review discusses the toxicity effects of heavy metals on the environment and mechanisms of phytoremediation, as well as the areas for improvement in the current process.

Endophytic fungus Serendipita indica reduces arsenic mobilization from root to fruit in colonized tomato plant

Jagriti Shukla et al.

Summary: The accumulation of arsenic in crop plants is a global concern. In this study, the endophytic fungus Serendipita indica was found to protect tomato plants from arsenic and reduce its accumulation. The fungus colonized the plant root, reducing oxidative stress and restricting the movement of arsenic from root to shoot and fruit. The study suggests that S. indica can tolerate arsenic by immobilizing it on the cell wall and accumulating it in the vacuole.

Arabidopsis PAP17 is a dual-localized purple acid phosphatase up-regulated during phosphate deprivation, senescence, and oxidative stress

Bryden O'Gallagher et al.

Summary: AtPAP17, a 35 kDa monomeric purple acid phosphatase, is up-regulated during phosphate starvation and leaf senescence, potentially contributing to phosphate metabolism. However, its catalytic activity for hydrogen peroxide is low. No significant physiological or biochemical changes were observed in the atpap17 mutant under phosphate or salt stress conditions.

Arsenic resistance in fungi conferred by extracellular bonding and vacuole septa compartmentalization

Lijuan Li et al.

Summary: Microbes play a crucial role in arsenic biogeochemical cycling and have great potential for environmental detoxification and bioremediation. Fungal strains showed that extracellular bonding and vacuole compartmentalization were the main mechanisms of arsenic resistance, with glutathione acting as an indicator of arsenic tolerance. Further analysis using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy identified that fungal septa besides vacuole could also immobilize arsenic.

Phosphate Uptake and Transport in Plants: An Elaborate Regulatory System

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is crucial for plant growth, and plants have developed sophisticated mechanisms to regulate the uptake and utilization of phosphate in response to changing environments. Recent research has focused on understanding the molecular regulatory mechanisms of phosphate transporters in plants such as Arabidopsis and rice, aiming to improve plant phosphorus efficiency through genetic enhancement.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alleviate negative effects of arsenic-induced stress on crop plants: A meta-analysis

Harald Neidhardt

Summary: Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi has the potential to increase host plant tolerance to toxic arsenic, reduce arsenic concentration in plant tissue, modify nutrient supply positively, and increase biomass. These promising results from meta-analysis encourage further field trials to develop AM fungi-based approaches for alleviating the negative effects of arsenic stress on crop growth.
