The terrestrial impact crater record: A statistical analysis of morphologies, structures, ages, lithologies, and more

Thomas Kenkmann

Summary: This review paper presents the main attributes of 198 confirmed impact structures on Earth while also discussing 10 further structures that are not yet entirely satisfying in terms of final confirmation based on shock features. The paper compares impact craters statistically in terms of morphology, structure, erosion/burial status, size, and age-frequency distributions, as well as discussing target petrography and shock effects found in the craters. Additionally, the paper provides an estimate of the number of craters that await discovery based on current discovery statistics of known crater structures.
