Plagioclase alteration and equilibration in ordinary chondrites: Metasomatism during thermal metamorphism

Jonathan A. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microtextures and compositions of feldspar in ordinary chondrites, revealing alteration and equilibration features during thermal metamorphism. The alteration of plagioclase results in the formation of new mineral phases, and plagioclase shows varying degrees of change throughout the metamorphic sequence.

Summary: By studying the amino acids in the Aguas Zarcas and Murchison meteorites, it is revealed that they preferentially enriched L-amino acids during the early formation of the solar system and the extent of contamination by Earth.

Exogenic basalt on asteroid (101955) Bennu

D. N. DellaGiustina et al.

Summary: This study presents the discovery of exotic boulders on the surface of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu, providing insights into the formation history of Bennu and the collisional evolution of the inner main belt. The presence of HED-like material on Bennu's surface suggests inter-asteroid mixing took place at macroscopic scales well after planetesimal formation ended.

Organic matter and water from asteroid Itokawa

Q. H. S. Chan et al.

Summary: This study examines the water and organic contents of a dust particle from near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa to gain insights into the nature of extra-terrestrial water and organic matter present at the birth of our solar system, as well as their subsequent evolution. The findings indicate an explicit extra-terrestrial origin of the organic matter and suggest material mixing in the asteroid belt. Analyses of Itokawa water suggest incorporation of D-poor water ice and evolution through late-stage hydration and D-enriched exogenous organics.

Amino acid abundances and compositions in iron and stony-iron meteorites

Jamie E. Elsila et al.

Summary: This study examines the amino acid content in three iron meteorites and a pallasite, revealing the presence of amino acids in these meteorites, some of which may be indigenous. The distribution of amino acids may be influenced by sample preparation reactions and thermal alteration processes.

Exogenous copper sulfide in returned asteroid Itokawa regolith grains are likely relicts of prior impacting body

Katherine D. Burgess et al.

Summary: The research showed that the mineral assemblage of cubanite-chalcopyrite-troilite-pyrrhotite found in the Itokawa asteroid regolith is likely exogenous and represents a component of an impacting body. This assemblage is indicative of low-temperature, aqueous alteration, and contains minerals rarely found in typical meteorite records.
