Mechanisms of muscle atrophy and hypertrophy: implications in health and disease

Roberta Sartori et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle acts as a protein reservoir in the body and plays a key role in regulating glucose and lipid levels. The growth or loss of muscle mass can impact overall metabolism, movement, eating, and breathing. Various quality systems control muscle function, adapting cells to environmental and nutritional cues.

M. Biceps Femoris Long Head Architecture and Sprint Ability in Youth Soccer Players

Paul Ritsche et al.

Summary: The study found that muscle architecture and sprint performance increased in youth soccer players from under-13 to under-15 age groups. The cross-sectional area of the m. biceps femoris long head was strongly correlated with sprint time.

Implementing Ultrasound Imaging for the Assessment of Muscle and Tendon Properties in Elite Sports: Practical Aspects, Methodological Considerations and Future Directions

Fabio Sarto et al.

Summary: Ultrasound imaging is widely used in elite sports to evaluate muscle and tendon properties, with potential applications in training response, injury risk detection, structural abnormality screening, and monitoring return to sport. However, practical and methodological considerations must be taken into account when applying this technology in elite sports settings.

Muscle and tendon adaptations to moderate load eccentric vs. concentric resistance exercise in young and older males

Jonathan Iain Quinlan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish the time course of muscle and tendon adaptations to submaximal concentric and eccentric resistance exercise training (RET). It was found that older males showed a dampened rate of adaptation with age in tendon Young's modulus, while both types of contractions resulted in similar overall changes in tendon Young's modulus. Muscle hypertrophy and strength increases were similar between concentric and eccentric contractions, but there were differences in pennation angle increases (greater in concentric) and fascicle length changes (greater in eccentric). Notably, muscle and tendon adaptations appeared to occur in synergy to maintain the efficacy of the muscle-tendon unit.
