Establishment of X-ray computed tomography traceability for additively manufactured surface texture evaluation

Wenjuan Sun et al.

Summary: Metal additively-manufactured (AM) parts are increasingly used as safety-critical components in industry. However, the surface textures of these parts are different from conventionally machined surfaces, which can directly affect their functional performance. This paper proposes the use of X-ray computed tomography (XCT) as a non-destructive technique to measure the non-line-of-sight surfaces of AM parts. The authors establish a measurement protocol using a prototype roughness standard and evaluate the uncertainty of the surface texture.
