Directed energy deposition was used to fabricate 15-5PH/WC composites with tailored reinforcement architecture. The addition of WC particles resulted in a synergistic enhancement of strength and ductility due to multiple factors.
Directed energy deposition of 15-5PH/WC composites with tailored reinforcement architecture was carried out by mechanical mixing of 15-5 PH powders and WC particles. The 15-5PH/WC composites exhibit a synergistic enhancement of strength and ductility than that without WC addition, due to the combined effects of grain refinement, non-equilibrium grain boundary strengthening, solution strengthening, and transformation-induced plasticity.
