A. M. Vilardell et al.

Summary: This research examined the performance of a novel hot-work tool steel for aluminum die casting applications manufactured by laser powder bed fusion, finding that appropriate heat treatment and hot isostatic pressing significantly improved material hardness and toughness, while nitriding treatment may reduce impact toughness.

Effect of Cerium on the Behavior of Primary Carbides in Cast H13 Steels

Yu Huang et al.

Summary: The addition of cerium affects the behavior of primary carbides, accelerating the nucleation of austenite and leading to a smaller size of primary carbides. Furthermore, the cerium content also influences the size of the last-to-solidify region and the morphology change of primary carbides.

Summary: The hot compression experiments show that the volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization increases with increasing strain and deformation temperature at a certain homogenization temperature, while it decreases with decreasing strain rate. The experiments also reveal that dynamic recrystallization is more likely to occur at high strain rates.

Failure analysis of H13 steel die for high pressure die casting Al alloy

Rengen Ding et al.

Summary: High pressure die casting (HPDC) dies are subjected to severe conditions such as high pressure, high temperature, and corrosion, which limit their service life. Analysis of a failed H13 steel die used for manufacturing a 5G component via Al alloy HPDC shows that erosion and cracking are the main failure modes, with high local stresses being the cause of fatal cracking.

The carbides, tensile properties, and work-hardening behavior of annealed H13 die steels with varied yttrium contents

Rongchun Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the micro-alloying of rare-earth yttrium (Y) was used to improve the fracture behavior and work-hardening ability of H13 die steel by modifying Cr23C6 and VC carbides. The addition of Y led to interruption and sphericalization of Cr23C6 carbides, increased quantity of VC carbides, and higher work-hardening exponent. Fractographic studies showed a transition from cleavage failure to ductile rupture with increasing Y content, but excess Y content resulted in detrimental inclusion clusters in dimples.

Improved mechanical properties by nanosize tungsten-molybdenum carbides in tungsten containing hot work die steels

Riming Wu et al.

Summary: AISI H13 die steel with substitution of tungsten for vanadium (H13?W) was produced through vacuum induction melting and forging, followed by specific quenching and tempering processes to demonstrate superior hardness and yield strength under the influence of nano and undissolved carbides. Two types of carbides were identified, with differing sizes, but both showed similar strengthening effects in H13?W/H13 steels compared to theoretical values.

Hierarchical Characteristics of Hydrogen-Assisted Crack Growth and Microstructural Strain Evolution in Tempered Martensitic Steels: Case of Quasi-cleavage Fracture

Tingshu Chen et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the local plastic strain evolution associated with crack growth in hydrogen-assisted quasi-cleavage fracture using tempered lath martensitic steels. The quasi-cleavage crack growth involved sharp crack initiation and growth, crack deflection/branching, crack tip blunting, and subsequent crack coalescence. Specific correlations were found between hydrogen-assisted cracking behavior and local plastic strain evolution at different spatial scales, with the largest plastic strain evolution occurring in the region where crack coalescence was observed.
