Anisotropic strengthening of nanotwin bundles in heterogeneous nanostructured Cu: Effect of deformation compatibility

H. Z. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the strengthening effect of nanotwins in heterogeneous nanostructure is not only dependent on the strength of themselves, but also influenced by the deformation compatibility with surrounding components. Orientation-dependent deformation compatibility was attributed to the interactions between isotropic shear bands in nanograin matrix and anisotropic deformation in nanotwin bundles.

A correlation between grain boundary character and deformation twin nucleation mechanism in coarse-grained high-Mn austenitic steel

Chang-Yu Hung et al.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrates the critical role of grain boundary characters in understanding the mechanism of deformation twin nucleation. Specifically, local stresses at particular boundaries, such as Sigma 3{111}, can trigger deformation twin nucleation. This finding highlights the practical importance of considering grain boundary characters in understanding material mechanical properties beyond established factors such as stacking fault energy and grain size.
