Oxygen vacancies and defects induced room temperature ferromagnetic properties of pure and Fe-doped CeO2 nanomaterials investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Swati Soni et al.

Summary: The structural, optical, magnetic and electronic-state properties of pure CeO2 and Ce1-xFexO2 nanomaterials synthesized by co-precipitation method were analyzed in pursuit of room temperature ferromagnetism and creation cum storage of oxygen vacancies for technological applications. The observed weak ferromagnetism in these samples is explained by correlating the F-center exchange mechanism with the formation of F+ center complexes Fe3+(up arrow) - VO(down arrow) - Ce3+(up arrow) and Ce3+(up arrow) - VO(down arrow) - Ce4+(up arrow) enjoined by oxygen vacancies.

Plasmacatalytic bubbles using CeO2 for organic pollutant degradation

Renwu Zhou et al.

Summary: The study developed a Plasma Catalytic Bubble Column Reactor to efficiently treat water by delivering oxidative reactive species produced by plasma to the liquid phase. The addition of CeO2 catalysts enhanced the degradation of water contaminants, with improved performance and durability through plasma pre-activation. The integrated system demonstrated superior removal efficiency and kinetic constant compared to individual components, showing potential for water purification.

Surface stress of nano-crystals

Siu-Wai Chan et al.

Summary: Surface stress is rarely discussed in chemistry, but it is closely related to size-dependent lattice changes in nanocrystals. Different materials exhibit different surface stress behaviors with changes in crystal size, with some materials showing tensile surface stress and others showing compressive surface stress. The coordination of surface atoms and lattice-matching between surface and interior play key roles in determining surface stress in nanostructures.

Characterization of high thermal conductivity fuel surrogates before and after ion irradiation

Adrien J. Terricabras et al.

Summary: The study utilized ceria and zirconia as surrogates to model UO2 behavior, incorporating 10 vol.% Al2O3 or SiC as high thermal conductivity second phases to achieve densities greater than ideal values. SEM imaging and X-ray diffraction confirmed uniform distribution of the second phase without intermetallic phase formation during sintering.
