Mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of a novel fine-grained Mg-Gd-Y-Ag-Zr-Ce alloy with high strength-ductility synergy

Xiaofei Cui et al.

Summary: Grain boundary precipitation and segregation play a crucial role in determining the mechanical properties of Mg alloys. Coarse-grained alloys are strengthened through precipitation, while fine-grained alloys are strengthened through segregation and precipitation, exhibiting a heterogeneous transition from elastic to plastic deformation. The insights provided in this study contribute to the design of Mg alloys with improved mechanical properties.

Effects of minor Nd and Er additions on the precipitation evolution and dynamic recrystallization behavior of Mg-6.0Zn-0.5Mn alloy

Bin-Jiang Lv et al.

Summary: A new wrought magnesium alloy based on Mg-6.0Zn-0.5Mn has been developed, exhibiting a superior combination of high tensile yield strength and good ductility. Addition of minor neodymium and erbium accelerates twinning, dynamic recrystallization, and dynamic precipitation processes, leading to improved mechanical properties. The alloy demonstrates enhanced yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation due to fine complete DRX grains, second phase particles, and a high density of precipitates resulting from the micro-alloying.

Hot tensile deformation behavior of extruded LAZ532 alloy with heterostructure

Xiaoqiang Li et al.

Summary: The hot tensile test was performed on an extruded Mg-5Li-3Al-2Zn (LAZ532) alloy with a heterostructure of fibrous extrusion zones (FEZs) and nonfibrous extrusion zones (non-FEZs) coexisted, showing that the alloy exhibited superplastic characteristics at lower strain rates or higher deformation temperatures. The microstructure analysis revealed different deformation behaviors between the FEZs and non-FEZs, with different mechanisms dominating during different stages of deformation. The activation energy was calculated to be around 110.0 kJ/mol, and the hot tensile deformation mechanism involved alternating and coordinated deformation among grain boundary slip, intragranular slip, and dynamic recrystallization (DRX).

Revealing the tensile anisotropy, tension-compression asymmetry, and strain-hardening behavior of a high-performance Mg-Gd-Ag alloy

Zhenquan Yang et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of a high-performance Mg-10.6Gd-2Ag alloy fabricated by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was systematically investigated in this study. The alloy exhibited high strength, ductility, near-symmetric yield response, and low anisotropy. The evolution of microstructure and texture played a significant role in influencing the mechanical properties of the alloy.
