Recent development of coloring alloys

Sung Hwan Hong et al.

Summary: This study reviews the strategy of tailoring the intrinsic color characteristics of metallic materials, including single-phase solid-solution alloys and multiphase alloys with specific chromatic phases. Modulation of optical properties in chromatic alloys depends on the transition energy of the solid solution phase, which can be significantly influenced by additional alloying elements. Microstructural design based on multiphase forming alloy system effectively improves chromaticity of the alloys.

Development of coloring alloys: Color design for lightweight Al-Mg-Si alloys

Sang Chul Mun et al.

Summary: Novel lightweight Al alloys were designed to achieve diverse color range and enhanced mechanical properties by controlling microstructural attributes. The different colors between constitutive phases, their spatial arrangement/dimension, and fraction play a critical role in determining the chromatic characteristic of the alloys. The research demonstrates the feasibility of the current color alloy design concept for ultra-light aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys.

Temperature-dependent elastic properties of binary and multicomponent high-entropy refractory carbides

D. G. Sangiovanni et al.

Summary: The study investigates the elastic moduli properties of refractory carbides at different temperatures through AIMD simulations. The results show that TaC exhibits the highest elastic resistance at high temperatures, while the (V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W) C system is suitable for applications requiring superior toughness at both room and elevated temperatures.

Development of ultrahigh-entropy ceramics with tailored oxidation behavior

William M. Mellor et al.

Summary: In the last decade, single-phase high-entropy materials have been of interest due to their unique properties. The recent development of 5-cation high-entropy carbides has demonstrated promising properties, and there is now a proposed development of ultrahigh-entropy carbides containing 6+ principal elements with greater combinatorial possibilities. The use of 6+ multi-cation compositions allows for ceramics with tunable properties and potentially higher orders of entropic stabilization.

Greatly enhanced solar absorption via high entropy ceramic AlCrTaTiZrN based solar selective absorber coatings

Cheng-Yu He et al.

Summary: This study utilized high entropy alloy nitride (HEAN) as a novel double absorption layer to improve solar absorption in high temperature solar selective absorbing coatings (SSACs). The as-deposited coating exhibited good optical properties with high solar absorptance and low thermal emittance. Thermal stability tests showed that HEAN-based SSACs have the ability to resist instability in high working temperatures.
