Novel design and composition optimization of self-lubricating functionally graded cemented tungsten carbide cutting tool material for dry machining

Rityuj Singh Parihar et al.

Summary: Functionally graded cemented tungsten carbide (FGCC) is a suitable material choice for cutting tool applications due to its balanced hardness and fracture toughness. By utilizing a composition gradient model and thermal residual stresses for design, self-lubricating properties can be optimized. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the design model in composition optimization.

Mechanical properties, microstructure and crack healing ability of Al2O3/TiC/TiB2/h-BN@Al2O3 self-lubricating ceramic tool material

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: By preparing the h-BN@Al2O3 solid lubricant with a core-shell structure using the heterogeneous nucleation method and adding it into Al2O3/TiC ceramic matrix with TiB2, the mechanical properties of the ceramic tool material were improved. During friction and wear tests, it was found that h-BN in h-BN@Al2O3 particles could effectively reduce wear. The crack healing ability of the self-lubricating ceramic tool material was studied by prefabricating cracks on the surface, where the oxidation of TiB2 and h-BN was identified as the main reason for crack healing.

Self-lubricating ceramic tool materials synergistically toughened by nano-coated particles and silicon carbide whiskers

Qi Li et al.

Summary: By using nano-coated particles and whiskers as additives, ceramic tool materials were strengthened and toughened, leading to improvements in hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness. SiC whiskers contributed to toughening, while nano CaF2@SiO2 coated particles filled gaps and enhanced interfacial bonding during sintering, resulting in increased transgranular fracture in the ceramic tool materials.
