Prescribing sea water quality criteria for arsenic, cadmium and lead through species sensitivity distribution

Panneerselvam Karthikeyan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to derive seawater quality criteria for arsenic, cadmium, and lead based on Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD). Eight species of sensitive marine organisms were assessed for their sensitivity to toxicity of these metals, and acute and chronic toxicity values were derived. The study prescribed Criterion Maximum Concentration, Criterion Continuous Concentration, and Predicted No Effect Concentration values as SWQC to protect marine organisms in different scenarios.

Summary: This study was conducted to examine the concentration of PM2.5-bound heavy metals in the air of Karaj, Iran, and assess the associated risks. The results showed a positive relationship between heavy metals and temperature, pressure, and wind speed, as well as a negative relationship with relative humidity.

Effects of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin-producing dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum on the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus

Jeonghoon Han et al.

Summary: The study investigated the response of the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus to the toxic marine dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum, revealing potential impacts on swimming behavior and detoxification mechanisms. Swimming speed and distance were significantly decreased at high concentrations of G. catenatum, while certain detoxification-related genes were upregulated or downregulated in response to G. catenatum exposure, suggesting a potential role as molecular biomarkers.

Summary: Air pollution impacts all populations globally, with Chelyabinsk, a typical industrial city, showing particulate matter levels above WHO recommendations. Iron was the most abundant component in both PM2.5 and PM10 samples, while zinc, manganese, and lead had the highest concentrations among trace elements.

Effects of toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum on the expression of detoxification-related genes in the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus

Jeonghoon Han et al.

Summary: The study assessed the acute toxicity and swimming behavior of the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus in response to the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum, finding no significant changes in survival and swimming behavior, but significant modulation of detoxification-related genes (CYPs and GSTs) expression levels. This indicates that CYP and GST genes may play crucial roles in detoxification mechanisms in T. japonicus, leading to no significant changes in survival and swimming behavior in response to A. minutum exposure.

Summary: The study in Chengdu found that heavy metals tend to be enriched in fine particles and can be used as tracers for primary pollution sources. The water-soluble ions composition in PM varies at different pollution levels, with SNA making significant contributions to PM during the haze episode.
