Assessment of microplastic sampling and extraction methods for drinking waters

Chuqiao Yuan et al.

Summary: No standardized methods currently exist for analyzing microplastics in treated drinking waters, leading to difficulties in making direct comparisons between studies. This study evaluates two known methods for collecting and extracting microplastics from drinking waters, finding that an in-line filtration method shows higher recoveries for reference microplastics and has a greater potential to reduce microplastic contamination.

Are microplastics correlated to phthalates in facility agriculture soil?

Qinglan Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of significant amounts of microplastics and phthalate esters in the soil of two agricultural areas in China, with greenhouse soil having higher microplastic content compared to non-greenhouse soil. Furthermore, a positive correlation between microplastics and phthalate esters was observed in one area but not in the other, indicating a complex relationship influenced by various environmental factors.

Assessment of Subsampling Strategies in Microspectroscopy of Environmental Microplastic Samples

Josef Brandt et al.

Summary: Analyzing the environmental occurrence of MP particles has received significant attention in the past decade, with a focus on effective risk assessment through accurate sampling and analysis methods. The choice of subsampling methods is crucial for reducing MP particle count errors, and increasing the fraction of MP particles in samples can help achieve lower errors.

An innovative evaluation method based on polymer mass detection to evaluate the contribution of microfibers from laundry process to municipal wastewater

Yujie Tian et al.

Summary: Clothes washing releases a significant amount of microfibers, including microplastic fibers, which contribute to wastewater treatment plants. Polyester fiber, the most important textile fiber, was quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The release of microplastic fibers from polyester clothes was measured through simulation experiments, revealing a higher contribution to WWTPs than previously estimated.

Coastal ecosystem inventory with characterization and identification of plastic contamination and additives from aquaculture materials

Arno Bringer et al.

Summary: While studies about marine litter have been conducted since the early 1970s, knowledge about the impact of aquaculture tools and practices on coastal areas, particularly in the Atlantic, remains limited. A pilot study in France revealed that a significant portion of plastics found on beaches were related to aquaculture, with microplastics primarily consisting of Polyamide. Pollutants such as dimethylphthalates and naphthalene were also found on PVC pipes commonly used in aquaculture. This information can help inform waste management and policy decisions to improve understanding and address pollution in coastal areas.
