Summary: This study describes a novel species of the family Alepocephalidae, Narcetes shonanmaruae, with colossal body size and unique morphological characteristics, as well as a high trophic position and piscivorous behavior. The species was supported by mitogenomic analyses and video footage showing active swimming behavior at great depths in Suruga Bay.
