Characterization of Bioactivities and Biosynthesis of Angucycline/Angucyclinone Derivatives Derived from Gephyromycinifex aptenodytis gen. nov., sp. nov.

Wen-Zhuo Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the strain NJES-13(T) from the gut microbiota of the Antarctic emperor penguin was found to have great potential in producing novel bioactive compounds. By using glass bead-enhanced fermentation, the productivity of three bioactive angucycline/angucyclinone derivatives (ADs) was increased. One of the newly identified ADs, 2-hydroxy-frigocyclinone, showed significant cytotoxicity against human-derived cancerous cell lines. The study also proposed the plausible biogenetic pathway of these three bioactive ADs.

Three decades of Canadian marine harmful algal events: Phytoplankton and phycotoxins of concern to human and ecosystem health

Cynthia H. McKenzie et al.

Summary: The study of marine harmful algal events in Canada over the last three decades reveals that harmful algal events have been widespread in both the Atlantic and Pacific coastal regions, with recurring paralytic shellfish toxin events, variable amnesic shellfish toxin incidents, and increasing occurrences of diarrhetic shellfish toxin events. Mortalities caused by harmful algae were more common in the Pacific region than in the Atlantic region. Not all information in the HAEDAT database was robust or complete enough to draw conclusions about temporal trends.

Innovations to culturing the uncultured microbial majority

William H. Lewis et al.

Summary: The review emphasizes the importance of culturing microorganisms to complement genomic data. Despite the abundance of microbial genome data, experimental testing is crucial to confirm hypotheses about cell biology, ecological roles, and evolution. Culturing remains a priority as the majority of archaeal and bacterial diversity remains uncultured and poorly understood. Advances in efficient cultivation strategies have been driven by a growing interest in and need for cultivating novel microorganisms.
