Organic-rich siliceous rocks in the upper Permian Dalong Formation (NW middle Yangtze): Provenance, paleoclimate and paleoenvironment

Wei Wu et al.

Summary: Based on geochemical data, the study analyzed the sources, climate, environment and mechanism of organic matter enrichment of the Upper Permian Dalong Formation in western Hubei Province. The formation can be divided into organic-rich and organic-lean shales, deposited under anoxic-sulfurized and oxic-suboxic conditions respectively. The decrease in primary productivity due to transition in climate was identified as the main factor controlling organic matter enrichment and bioquartz formation.

Geochemical characteristics of the Upper Triassic black mudstones in the eastern Qiangtang Basin, Tibet: Implications for petroleum potential and depositional environment

Zhongwei Wang et al.

Summary: The Upper Triassic mudstones in the Qiangtang Basin have been studied for their organic and inorganic geochemical characteristics to assess their petroleum potential. The results show that they have fair to good source rock characteristics, with a potential for high hydrocarbon abundances and appropriate thermal maturity. The organic matter source and type are similar to neighboring sections, but the mudstone samples from the Eer Tuolongba section exhibit better petroleum potential.

Paleoclimate and paleoceanographic evolution during the Permian-Triassic transition (western Hubei area, South China) and their geological implications

Binsong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study presents geochemical and pyrite morphological data from the Upper Permian-Lower Triassic shale succession in the Western Hubei Trough, supporting the significant role of regional tectonic activities in the hydrographic and redox evolution of the area, suggesting anoxia may not be the worldwide cause of the marine biocrisis. An extensive comparison between marine and terrestrial successions indicates that global warming in the Late Permian and global cooling in the Permian-Triassic transition may have affected the supply of freshwater to the ocean and fluctuations in seawater paleosalinity, with anomalous changes triggered by paleoclimate potentially playing a role in the biocrisis at the Permian-Triassic boundary.

Palaeoenvironment evolution and organic matter accumulation of the Upper Triassic mudstones from the eastern Qiangtang Basin (Tibet), eastern Tethys

Zhongwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the Upper Triassic successions in the Qiangtang Basin, revealing that organic matter accumulation was mainly influenced by high salinity and slow sedimentation rate. The analysis also showed significant correlations between TOC content in mudstones and factors such as paleosalinity, redox conditions, and detrital influx.
