Soft-sediment deformation structures in Aptian lacustrine laminites: Evidence of post-rift paleoseismicity in the Araripe basin, NE Brazil

Marcio Lima Alencar et al.

Summary: Soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) are important for studying paleoseismic activity and fluid flow in sedimentary basins. In the Crato Formation of the Araripe Basin, various SSDS such as loop beddings and convolute laminations were observed, indicating a long history of post-rift tectonic activity in the region. These structures show that seismic activities can affect sedimentary sequences that were previously thought to be unaffected.

Sedimentary evolution of distributive fluvial systems within intraplate tectonic active basins: Case study of the Early Cretaceous Araripina Formation (Araripe Basin, NE Brazil)

Lucas Warren et al.

Summary: The Araripina Formation in the Araripe Basin represents deposition in a distributive fluvial system following regional tectonic subsidence. It is characterized by two depositional sequences with various sedimentary facies associations, reflecting a tectonically active interior basin with periodic flooding events and distinct source areas. The lower sequence facies associations indicate deposition in a meandering distributive fluvial system, while the upper sequence suggests intense tectonic activity in a large distal floodbasin dominated by suspension, with a change in paleodrainage patterns after the Albian period.

Structural control and geochronology of Cretaceous carbonate breccia pipes, Crato Formation, Araripe Basin, NE Brazil

Maria Alcione Lima Celestino et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the control of the Triunfo Fault Zone on the development of carbonate breccia pipes in the Crato Formation and constrain the timing of brittle deformation. Results suggest that polyphasic deformation in the pipes may be caused by the circulation of fluid along pre-existing faults and pipes.

Towards an actualistic view of the Crato Konservat-Lagerstatte paleoenvironment: A new hypothesis as an Early Cretaceous (Aptian) equatorial and semi-arid wetland

Alexandre Cunha Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new hypothesis on the paleoecological and paleoenvironmental conditions of the Crato Konservat-Lagerstätte, suggesting it was a seasonal, semi-arid shallow lacustrine wetland based on the ecology of extant relatives of fossil groups. The fossils were found to be mainly autochthonous to parautochthonous and were preserved through base-level fluctuations in a shallow lacustrine system subject to periodic flooding. Exceptional preservation in these environments was mediated by microbial processes.

Dinos among the dunes: Dinoturbation in the Piramboia Formation (Parana Basin), Sao Paulo State and comments on cross-section tracks

Beatriz Christofoletti et al.

Summary: The presence of soft-sediment deformation structures in the Jurassic Piramboia Formation in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, may have been produced by dinosaurs, potentially representing the oldest evidence of dinosaur presence in this region. Additionally, the discovery reinforces the correlation between Piramboia Formation and the Guara Formation in southern Brazil.

Pre-salt rift morphology controls salt tectonics in the Campos Basin, offshore SE Brazil

Francyne Bochi do Amarante et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that gravity-driven salt tectonics in the Campos Basin result in complex structural styles, with salt and its overburden translating seaward leading to different domains of overburden deformation and various types of salt structures. The multiphase deformation over complex base-salt relief is consistent with physical models and previous seismic reflection studies, with local strains overprinting margin-scale patterns of deformation.

Model for calcite spherulite formation in organic, clay-rich, lacustrine

Hannes Claes et al.

Summary: The formation of carbonate spherulites in the Barbalha Formation in Northeast Brazil is influenced by both organic and clay-rich layers, with a complex mixture of clays, organic matter, and evaporites playing a role. The spherulites mainly consist of oil-prone alginite and are formed chemically-driven in a viscous matrix, with undeniable microbial influence present in the clayey matrix.
