Hyperpolarized Xe-129 MRI of the rat brain with chemical shift saturation recovery and spiral-IDEAL readout

Yonni Friedlander et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of using Xe-129 chemical shift saturation recovery (CSSR) combined with spiral-IDEAL imaging to measure the time-course of red blood cell and brain tissue signals in the rat brain. Hypercapnia affects the tissue-to-RBC signal intensity ratio, indicating an increase in gas transfer.

Measuring 129Xe transfer across the blood-brain barrier using MR spectroscopy

Madhwesha R. Rao et al.

Summary: This study developed a tracer kinetic model to estimate the transfer rate of HP Xe-129 from cerebral blood to gray matter in the human brain, considering the effects of cerebral physiology, perfusion, and magnetization dynamics. The tracer transfer coefficients were determined through numerical fitting of experimental data, resulting in values between 0.1 and 0.14. The developed model provides a validated estimation of the transfer dynamics of HP Xe-129 in the human brain.

Removing CO2 from Xenon anaesthesia circuits using an amino-acid ionic liquid solution in a membrane contactor

C. F. Martins et al.

Summary: The study proposes a method for recovering xenon in an anaesthesia closed-circuit system using a gas-ionic liquid membrane contactor system to reduce costs and promote the widespread use of xenon. The system showed high efficiency, especially when xenon was used as an inhalational anaesthetic. Additionally, the use of ion-exchange resins proved to be an efficient strategy for ionic liquid regeneration.

Hyperpolarized 129Xe multi-slice imaging of the human brain using a 3D gradient echo pulse sequence

Vira Grynko et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of performing multi-slice human brain MRI using HP Xe-129, showing similar SNR values and signal distribution in axial and sagittal orientations. Anatomical features such as ventricles were also observed in both orientations, indicating the potential of HP Xe-129 multi-slice MRI for improving brain imaging techniques.

The effects of an initial depolarization pulse on dissolved phase hyperpolarized 129Xe brain MRI

Yurii Shepelytskyi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of an initial 90-degree depolarization RF pulse on HP Xe-129 brain imaging, finding that the initial depolarization reduced signal variability by more than two times between different breath-hold images. Variability in SNR was highest in the posterior brain region, with lower levels observed in the anterior region.
