Tuning the Properties of Nanocomposites by Trapping Them in Deep Metastable States

Zhengping Zhou et al.

Summary: The interfacial region formed around nanoparticles in a polymer matrix plays a crucial role in determining the macroscopic properties of polymer nanocomposites. This study reveals that the initial trapping of polymer chains at the surfaces of nanoparticles in solution strongly influences the macroscopic properties of the nanocomposites, and these differences persist even after long-term thermal annealing.

Collective Nanoparticle Dynamics Associated with Bridging Network Formation in Model Polymer Nanocomposites

Benjamin M. Yavitt et al.

Summary: This study investigated the collective dynamics of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites and found that nanoparticles are interconnected through polymer bridges to form a network-like microstructure at high loadings. The collective relaxation times of nanoparticles are significantly longer than the diffusion limit of isolated nanoparticles and show a rich dependence on observation wavevector and loading. A mode-coupling theory analysis successfully captured the observed dependencies of collective nanoparticle dynamics, with some quantitative deviations for entangled samples. Additionally, an unusual and weak temperature dependence of collective nanoparticle dynamics was identified, contrasting with the mechanical response.

Activated Transport in Polymer Grafted Nanoparticle Melts

Mayank Jhalaria et al.

Summary: Through experiments, it was found that the activation energy for the local segmental dynamics of polymer chains densely grafted to nanoparticles goes through a minimum as a function of chain length, while the elementary jump size reaches a maximum around the same chain length. These results are likely due to the dynamic consequences of a structural transition of the grafted polymer brush from extended to interpenetrated with increasing chain length, leading to lower activation energy in regions of different graft chain lengths near this structural transition, likely due to fluctuation effects, which also enhance gas transport.

Role of Adsorbed Polymers on Nanoparticle Dispersion in Drying Polymer Nanocomposite Films

Sunhyung Kim et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of adsorbed polymers on the microstructure and dispersion of nanoparticles during the drying process. The research found that increasing polymer adsorption suppresses bonding between nanoparticles in the later stages of drying, resulting in different types of clusters formed by nanoparticles with varying adsorption levels. The study establishes the potential for quantitative control of nanoparticle dispersion in polymer nanocomposite films through modification of polymer adsorption.
